We're back!!

After a nearly two-year absence, the York High school newspaper is back. Formerly titled The York Hi-Lites for nearly 60 years, we've tweaked the title for the on-line edition, which will now be simply YORK HIGHlights.

The school newspaper is a tradition dating back to 1954, nearly 60 years ago. About two years ago, the paper, along with the journalism program, mysteriously disappeared.

Now, a dedicated group of students are bringing all the news from York High and York City School District back to you. The on-line edition will hopefully be more accessible to the masses, including alumni wanting to catch up on what's happening at their alma mater. We're hoping ongoing updates available only in a digital format will help keep readers in touch with the latest York High news.

We hope you enjoy surfing our site, and we welcome any suggestions, criticisms, or help from anyone interested in participating.

Want to see Europe?

Here's your chance

By Nicole Harman

HIGHlights staff

Have you ever imagined what it would be like to travel overseas, the Atlantic Ocean, for example, to see Europe, countries and cities that have been around far longer than America? Well, here's your chance to make that dream a reality.

The William Penn Study Abroad Club is back, and with some long-range planning, is preparing for a trip to three major cities in Europe - London, Paris, and Rome, a nine-day trip over Easter break, in the beginning of April, next year.

The club was created to expose students to the world outside the city limits. During the trips students are exposed to the sights and experiences unique to those cultures. Students get to see firsthand many of the historical places that we read about in our history classes.

Former teacher Rachel Glick started the club, which is now being run by psychology teacher/reading coach Stephanie Gottloeb. In past years the club has taken trips to Paris in the summer of 2009: Paris, Florence, and Rome in November of 2010; and Madrid, Toledo, Costa Del Sol, and Morocco in the spring of 2013.

The next trip the club is planning will be this spring, in April of 2015 to three major cities in Europe: London, Paris, and Rome. The trip costs a little under $3,000, and this covers airfare, hotel stays in each city, breakfast and dinner daily, tour director, and entrances into the sights. The trip is being planned far in advance so students can raise the funds to attend the trip.

Anyone interested in attending should stop by and see Gottloeb in room D203 for more information, or click on the links provided here. The club meets on the first early dismissal Wednesday of each month in room D203. All matters regarding the trip will be discussed.

First marking period comes to an end; parent conferences begin

As one senior put it, commenting on her final year of high school, "the year is just rolling by," adding that it doesn't even feel like her senior year yet.

Feel or not, the year is here and one-fourth over. The first marking period ended Oct. 27, and with that, parent teacher conferences are coming up this week. Students will have an early dismissal schedule Wednesday through Friday this week, and teachers will be available for parent conferences from 1:30 to 3:15 p.m. each day. Teachers will also be on hand from 5:15 to 8:15 p.m. Thursday evening, with refreshments being served during Thursday's conference times.

Parents interested in attending conferences should contact the high school by Monday, Nov. 3. Fliers were sent home with students on Friday, Oct. 31.

From there, Thanksgiving is just around the corner, three more weeks away. While it may not feel like the school year has begun, before you know it, it will be gone.

Twins? Really? Or is that his Mini-Me? Freshman science teacher Mark Windsor and freshman Jaylin Laboy Bermudez teamed up with matching suspenders and bow ties to celebrate Homecoming Spirit Week recently. They're looking good, but where's Windsor's sock bun?
